The summer is a great time to get involved with a charitable organization! With the nicer weather, many non-profits host fundraising events from relays and fun runs to galas and wine tastings. Here are 5 ways you can get involved this summer:
1. Good Brothas & EIM Presents: Run Family Run 5K

"The Run Family Run 5K event is a community project in hopes of giving the neighborhood an opportunity to start a healthy lifestyle, while simultaneously bringing awareness to the gun violence that has plagued Coney Island. We believe that if we are proactive in giving our kids different options to channel their energy, they will better understand the importance of camaraderie and have a greater sense of self-worth and feeling that they belong. We also strongly feel that running is a healthy form of cardio, and communities all across our borough would greatly benefit from this project." --Good Brothas, 2019
2. American Heart Association: Heart Walk
For nearly 100 years, the American Heart Association (AHA) has been fighting heart disease and stroke, with the goal of saving and improving lives. AHA has several events across the country, including the Heart Walk, a fun family event to celebrate heart health and recommit to a healthy lifestyle. The 2019 Brooklyn Heart Walk is on September 15, 2019, while the AHA Virtual Heart Walk is held June 30, 2019. The AHA has several other events to join in on, including their Heart Ball, a black-tie fundraiser, and CycleNation, a movement that empowers Americans to hop on a bike for heart health.
3. South Bronx Educational Foundation: Charity Wine Tasting
If exercise isn’t your thing, maybe wine is! Join the South Bronx Educational Foundation (SBEF) at their 9th Annual Charity Wine Tasting event on July 11th. All proceeds will support the SBEF, which is a non-profit dedicated to serving the inner-city students of the Bronx.
4. American Cancer Society: Relay for Life
The American Cancer society’s signature fundraiser, Relay for Life, is a team fundraising event. Team members take turns walking around a track or designated path, with each team is asked to have a member on the track at all times to signify that cancer never sleeps. Each event is between 6 to 24 hours in length. The American Cancer Society says that “Cancer patients don't stop because they're tired, and for one night, neither do we.” There are Relay for Life events happening all summer, across the USA. Find a Relay for Life event near you.
5. Start your own fundraiser!
If you like to walk to the beat of your own drum, why not start your own fundraiser? You can do so quite easily through many large non-profits. Simply find a cause that resonates with you and check out the “fundraise” page. You can customize your fundraiser and decide if you’d like to organize an event or do a virtual fundraiser. You can even turn your birthday party or wedding into a fundraiser for your charity of choice. Some options include the Malala Fund, which champions every girl’s right to free, safe, quality education, and the ASPCA, which advocates for anti-animal cruelty mission across the country.
